Location: Dungarpur or Udaipur District, Rajasthan
Programme: Ansh
Type: Full time, (one year fixed term contract)
Languages: Fluency in English and Hindi is required
Reports to: Program Manager-KMC
About the Project
Our main intervention is Kangaroo Mother Care, a highly cost-effective and scientifically proven intervention for saving newborn lives. Kangaroo Care has three components:
●Skin-to-Skin Contact: Skin-to-skin contact with the mother regulates the infant’s body temperature, reducing hypothermia.
●Close Monitoring: Monitoring mothers and newborns for danger signs.
●Exclusive Breastfeeding: Exclusive breastfeeding provides benefits to the infant's immune system and help in weight gain.
Currently, we have 27 on-ground full-time staff delivering our programs in two hospitals—Pali District Hospital and Baran District Hospital of Rajasthan—with the aim to replicate and adapt this model for broader implementation in public health systems.
We run two KMC programs in both of our hospitals:
●KMC in Post Natal Care (PNC) Ward Program for Stable Low Birth Weight and Preterm Newborns.
●Early Initiation of KMC in Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) Program for Unstable Low Birth Weight and Preterm Newborns.
Main model components are:
●Repurpose some space in the health facilities and create dedicated space for Kangaroo Care.
●Recruit health workers to act as dedicated Kangaroo Care counsellors for mothers.
●Provide training to clinicians and nurses on supporting and managing kangaroo care and other components of the program.
●Follow up with mothers after discharge to ensure continued behavioural change and monitor the newborn for any danger signs.
We now have more than 100 on-ground full-time staff, 4 implementation partners, and 8 core team members delivering our programs in 8 District Hospitals. We estimate a neonatal mortality reduction of 33-50% as a result of Ansh programs, and plan to scale our life-saving work to 15 District Hospitals across Rajasthan by the end of the year.
We also recently began collaborating with the Indian government to explore ways to scale KMC provision. Ansh has been invited to support the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) on the Sankalp research project to create feasible, scalable interventions to reduce newborn deaths that can be applied at both state and national levels. The implementation research will inform policy recommendations for nine high-priority states and for the Indian Ministry of Health, concluding in January 2027.

You will map existing processes, identify issues preventing the effective delivery of KMC and help the Ansh leadership team evaluate potential solutions to improve delivery through government systems in Rajasthan. To test potential solutions, you will run small-scale experiments, in particular helping to design, set up and evaluate implementation models.
